Diagnostic Ultrasound

ReBalance Physiotherapy is the first clinic in Dublin City Centre to offer diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound. This advanced imaging technique allows for accurate, real-time assessment of soft tissue injuries, such as tendonopathies, bursitis, and muscular tears, enhancing diagnosis and guiding targeted treatment plans.

Plantar Fascitis

Bursitis

Ligament Strains

Tendinopathy

Rotator Cuff Tears

Frozen Shoulder

Muscle Tears

Tenosynovitis

Tendon Tears

How Does Diagnostic Ultrasound Work?

Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and soft tissues.

A small handheld device called a transducer is moved gently over the skin. This device sends sound waves into the body and listens for the echoes that bounce back.

The returning echoes are instantly converted into detailed images on a screen, allowing clinicians to visualize injuries, detect inflammation, identify tears, and guide treatment — all without radiation.

It is safe, non-invasive, and provides dynamic imaging, meaning we can assess structures as they move and under load, offering a unique advantage over MRI or X-ray in many cases.

How Effective is Diagnostic Ultrasound?

Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound is a highly effective tool for assessing soft tissue injuries such as tendon tears, bursitis, muscle strains, and ligament injuries. Numerous studies have shown that ultrasound can be as accurate as MRI for diagnosing conditions like rotator cuff tears, Achilles tendinopathy, and hip bursitis. It provides real-time, dynamic imaging, allowing for assessment of tissues during movement — something static imaging like MRI or X-ray cannot offer.

Ultrasound is also safe, non-invasive, and cost-effective, with no exposure to radiation. Its ability to instantly guide clinical decision-making, including targeted treatments like injections or rehabilitation planning, makes it a powerful tool in musculoskeletal care. With high sensitivity and specificity for soft tissue structures, diagnostic ultrasound plays a vital role in delivering faster, more precise, and more patient-friendly diagnoses.

What are Ultrasound Guided Therapies?

Ultrasound-guided therapies use real-time imaging to accurately target specific tissues during treatment. By visualizing muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints as the therapy is performed, clinicians can precisely guide interventions like dry needling or shockwave therapy to the exact site of injury or dysfunction. This improves both the safety and effectiveness of treatment, ensuring that therapies are delivered with pinpoint accuracy.

For example, ultrasound-guided dry needling allows the clinician to directly target deep trigger points or injured tissue that might otherwise be missed. Ultrasound-guided shockwave therapy ensures that the high-energy pulses are precisely focused on the affected area, such as a calcified tendon or chronic tendinopathy. Using ultrasound guidance enhances treatment outcomes, speeds recovery, and reduces the risk of complications compared to non-guided techniques.

*** Please note a diagnostic Ultrasound Assessment will have to be performed prior to any Ultrasound Guided Therapies can be administered ***
